You could either be incredibly rude or you could miss crucial parts, if not the rest of, your favorite television program. Now with TiVo you would be able to pause your program right there in the middle of it when it is being aired live. The best part about this is that it almost makes the unwelcome and unexpected visitation from your annoying neighbors worthwhile.

Even though I am sure you, like most Americans, would prefer to watch television commercials than listen to their annoying neighbor ramble on and on about nothing, it is still cool to know that when you get back from your neighbors totally uninteresting and irrelevant stories you will be able to un-pause your favorite program and actually fast forward through all the commercials. This is possible because with TiVo, when you pause the TV at a certain point, it saves all of the information automatically in a temporary format. So in other words, you will be able to fast forward all the way up until the point of where the TV has gotten live. TiVo is truly incredible.

With the DVR unit, you will be able to record hours of programs without having to worry about cumbersome tape cassettes that you will never watch again.

Could I watch HD programming with Brighthouse basic cable?

Here it goes again, my father and I are planning on purchasing an LCD HDTV, preferably; 42' inch, 1080p HD, and still deciding whether 60Hz or 120Hz.
We are currently watching TV through an old television, not an HDTV, and an antenna (of course, with the converter box).
Now, we are planning on getting cable to get the most of our HDTV, but we would like to limit our spending. With that being said, we are looking to get the basic-cable instead of the thousand-channel package.
I have read some blogs online mentioning some "NTSC/ATSC tuners" and "QAM".
Does that have any relevance with what my question is asking?
Will I be getting full High Definition through the basic-cable package with Brighthouse?
Or will I need an HD-cable-box-receiver?

First, here are the answers to the easy part of your question:

ATSC: the digital tuner for receiving over-the-air (OTA) channels in North American via an antenna. It does nothing else.

NTSC: the analog tuner for North America--currently useful only in Canada for analog OTA, and in both countries for basic analog cable (no cable box).

QAM: the 3rd tuner equipped in some (not all) modern TVs for the purpose of receiving limited digital channels from a cable service without a cable box.

If your set you want to buy has the QAM tuner (check its specs), it can receive the standard-definition digital versions of your local channels plus a few common cable channels. The transmission may be in HD in some cases, but don't count on it. You get them without a cable box and without a pricey digital channel package, which helps explain why the experience won't be all that sensational.

To get the full benefit of an HDTV, you really need to spring for the cable company's HD channel package and an HD box.

The 60 and 120 Hz question has been asked many times here, so you might try the SEARCH FOR QUESTIONS option at the top of the page for a lot of answers. You'll find pro and con regarding paying for 120 Hz, but FWIW, I wouldn't buy an LCD TV without it.
